MY UNIVERSITY LIFE

All students usually refer to study from elementary school through high school. After finishing high school, students who continue to study at a higher level such as college or university are called Ni-Sit (in Khmer). Khmer people on these days call university.
The temple where I was staying in 2006-2010.

I was able to study at Tra Vinh University (TVU) by receiving a quota. During the exam, there were only students from the west. Tra Vinh University is called Sakalavidyalaya Tra Vinh for sort. It is a big state university in Southern Vietnam. I chose English as my major at the Faculty of Economics, Law & Foreign Languages.
I moved from my temple (Russey Srok) in Kompong Spean district to live in the other temples to study in Tra Vinh city. Kom Pong Spean District is about 40 kilometers from Tra Vinh. It takes about 45 minutes to get there by air-conditioned bus. Tra Vinh is the last one of all provinces in South of Vietnam. And Tra Vinh University is very large place.
I stayed in a monk’s temple with many monks and other older students. There were five monks in my room. The Temple where I stayed was called Bodhisalaraja Kompong. It was the biggest temple in my province. And it is in the center of Tra Vinh city. We had to study hard in temple and everybody shared the same answers of homework that we got from University. This temple was convenient because it was next to University and nearly the way walk to my faculty of.
At the beginning of the semester, there was a newcomer welcome party. Older students would test the effort and patience of the younger students. They taught some students who are my classmates to sing cheer song, from a line, run around the field and do anything they wanted. But, I could not join with them in that time. Because I am a monk, I thought they felt happily rather than.
For students at university, there were many sports competition between the faculties. The new students would sing cheer songs to encourage the athletes from their faculties. At that time, there were fifteen faculties altogether. The strongest faculty was the Faculty of Education because they had the most students and they had the Department of Physical Education. My faculty usually came in fourth or fifth.
After annual sports event within the university, there would be the University Games during the break between semesters on October. This was a competition between universities all over the country. In this time, I only brief some activities at University you know clearly and I finish it now.
After three years of Tra Vinh University, I received a letter from a monk, he is my friend, when I was young and went to school each other. He advised me to continue studying higher level in Thailand. So, I chose to study in Thailand after finished my education in Tra Vinh University still nowadays.

When I was a student

 Bachelor's degree, Major in English

Tra Vinh University (I was at TVU for three years)

From the right "Kim Thi Ngoc Thanh & Kim Thi Ngoc Oanh"  (Graduated, 10-10-2012)
Bachelor's degree, Major in Administration of economics.

Even though my school is in the west of Tra Vinh province, we use the standard Vietnamese language in class, besides Vietnamese, we study Khmer language in temple after leave Vietnamese school. We started learning English for the first time in Elementary 5, but some private schools students started English in Elementary 1. Elementary school is five years in Kampucheakrom (South of Vietnam).
After elementary school, I continued on to junior high and high school at Kom Pong Spean’s School or Cau Ke (in Vietnamese). All the Schools I attended are public school so I did not pay for tuition. I only need to buy some books and uniforms. I took a lunch box, I did not have to buy foods, either. Otherwise my mother gave me ten thousands VND, it is equal twenty Baths per day for lunch.
The high school was about two kilometers from my home. And my younger brother and I would ride there on the same bicycle. I pedaled and he would sit in the back. School started at seven fifteen. Students would pay respect to the flag, sing the national anthem, pray and pledge allegiance before going to class. The first subject started about half past seven o’clock. And school ended about four thirty. After school was over, we would ride the bicycle back home, help with the housework a little bit and then study and do homework.
Secondary school also takes seven years-junior high four years and high school three years. After finishing high school, I studied at Tra Vinh University in Tra Vinh City, Tra Vinh province the South of Vietnam. In order to attend a state university, one has to take an entrance examination. In the South of Vietnam, there are many university entrance exams. The first one is only for Southeastern students in order quality for Tra Vinh University. After that, there many other majors entrance exam for state university on July
School in Vietnam start the first semester on September, there are many school vacations. The main vacation is summer and goes from about the middle of May until the middle of August. And university in Vietnam starts in August and there are two vacations. The main summer vacation starts around the middle of May until the middle of August.
After I finished my Bachelor’s degree, continued to study in Thailand because I would like to know more in Buddhism.

MY FAMILY

My family, there are eight people; my father, mother, three elder sisters, an elder brother, a younger brother and I. My family lives at two hamlet, Russey Srok village, Kompong Spean district, Preah Tro Peang province, Kampucheakrom (South of Vietnam).
My parents were farmers. They worked hard in the field for looking after all of their children. Nowadays, my father is sixty-four years old and mother is younger than my father one year. They love their children very much. My eldest sister was dead, because she had disease while she was giving a birth of her son. Then, my brother-in-law was married with second sister of mine, after six years. The second sister of mine takes care of her elder sister’s son and loved him so much. During, they lived together and happiness. Return to one more my elder sister. I did not know how to her face was, because she died when my mother was giving a birth me. So I never know about her life. “There are eight members in our family”, I only heard my parents said. Reach to my elder brother. He got married around three years ago, and had a daughter.

My younger brother and I are students. I, myself finished my Bachelor’s degree, the Faculty of Economics, Law and Foreign Language, major in English, at Tra Vinh University (TVU) in South of Vietnam (Kampucheakrom). Nowadays I continue my education at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University Chiang Mai campus in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. I want to continue Master’s degree in English. But, when I passed into Thailand, I think that my English is still poor, because of people and University in Thailand, they learn general subjects and use lots of Buddhism words in their societies whenever it is very difficult for me, if I study Master’s degree. By the ways, I must apply for studying in Bachelor’s degree again in first year coming to Thailand. Sometimes, I can improve my English and know some kinds of education systems of Thailand. I hope that I will know more in Thai before I attend to master’s degree in next year. And I try to learn more Buddhism words from lecturers and friends in University. My younger brother, he is a student at Tra Vinh University (Vietnam). His field of study is Khmer Literature Cultural of Southern Vietnam (Kampucheakrom). So at the present time, my family consists of eleven people, adding with one niece and two nephews of mine.
